Maddie Lock
Maddie Lock (they/them) is a filmmaker and artist born in Eastbourne and based in Brighton, with a passion for trans/queer perspectives, clowns, puppetry, political narratives, and documentaries.
Maddie studied Film & History at the University of Southampton, works for Brighton Fringe, and recently completed a film mentorship as part of Soho House x Creative Mentor Network. In 2023, Maddie made their premiere short film Monsters, an experimental documentary, with hopes of taking the current narrative surrounding trans and queer people as ‘monsters’, and juxtaposing this with childhood videos, amusement parks, and slugs… It was made with zero budget, and no cast/crew aside from Maddie, as a way of building a portfolio despite lacking experience and financial barriers to the film industry. Monsters has featured at ten festivals, and has been a finalist at Lowestoft Film Festival, as well as a semi-finalist at San Francisco Arthouse Short Festival.

Maddie was mentored by Astrid Goldsmith on their film Welcome to the Puppet Show: A Day at the Circus, for Young Film Network South East. Follow the film on Instagram: @puppetshowfilm and watch it below!
Join Clown, Bear and Star, three neurodivergent characters, on their adventure to the circus. There will be big tops, candy floss, and even a musical number, but all is not as it seems in the land of puppets…
